Black sea seagrass meadows on lower infralittoral sands

Seagrass meadows are found on sandy and sandy-muddy bottoms in sheltered habitats with sufficient light penetration for the growth of vascular plants. Zostera marinais generally dominant and may form pure stands but other species of seagrass may occur, together with red and green algae. Characteristic species: Zostera marina, Zostera noltei, Cystoseira barbata, Gracilaria gracilis. 115 macroalgal species have been recorded in this habitat type in the Black Sea. Typical genera are: Ceramium, Cladophora, Kylinia, Laurencia, Melobesia and Polysiphonia.
