Coralligenous platforms

These are coralligenous horizontal formations developing within sedimentary beds subject to currents, at up to at least 100 metres depth in clear waters. These formations are not usually built on rock substrata but result from the active development of constructor organisms (e.g. calcified algae, hard-skeleton invertebrates) from scattered elements on loose beds, shells, stones, and graves. The thickness of these coralligenous formations can vary between a few centimeters and several meters. This type of coralligenous then constitutes slab platforms, thus giving its name to this very specific facies.
