Geometridae (Leach, 1815)
Descripción
Gran familia cosmopolita que reúne unas 15000 especies de tamaño mediano a pequeño. Se conocen en Europa más de 1000 especies. Las orugas de esta familia son conocidas por su aspecto de palo y por su peculiar forma de desplazarse, mediante bucles sucesivos que realizan con su cuerpo, como si estuvieran midiendo el terreno; de ahí su nombre, que procede del griego y significa agrimensor, lo que alude a sus movimientos, que recuerdan a los de una mano que midiera a palmos una distancia. Se distinguen por tener solamente dos pares de propatas funcionales. Por lo común son largas y delgadas y muchas son extremadamente crípticas con ramitas. Se alimentan de hojas de árboles, arbustos y plantas de porte bajo. Las orugas de algunos grupos, particularmente las del género Euphitecia, comen las flores y las semillas de varias plantas herbáceas.
