Nomenclatura

Publicación original: Tradescantia virginiana L.. Sp. Pl.: 288. (1753).

Etimología de Tradescantia: Género establecido por Ruppius (1718) y revalidado por Linneo (1753); cuyo nombre fue homenaje, con seguridad, a John Tradescant, padre (c. 1570-1638), naturalista, jardinero, viajero, colector de plantas y coleccionista inglés; no, contra lo que habitualmente se dice, a John Tradescant, hijo (1608-1662), también jardinero, botánico, etc. -en Ruppius se lee: "Tradescantia, sive Ephemerum Virginianum. [...] Phalangium ephemerum, virginianum Iohannis Tradescanti Parkins. Parad. 15"; y en J. Parkinson, Paradisi in sole paradisus terrestris (1629): "Phalangium Ephemerum Virginianum Ioannis Tradescant. This Spiderwort is of late knowledge, and for it the Christian world is indebted vnto that painfull industrious searcher, and louer of all natures varieties, Ion Tradescant (sometimes belonging to de right Honourable Lord Robert Earle of Salisbury, Lord Tresaurer of England in his time, and then vnto the right Honourable the Lord Wotton at Canterbury in Kent, and lastly vnto the late Duke of Buckingham) who first receiued it of a friend, that brought it out of Virginia, thinking it to bee the Silke Grasse that groweth there, and that imparted hereof, as of many other things, both to me and others"
