Chelonii Latrille, 1800
Descripción
Grupo de reptiles que se caracteriza por la presencia de un caparazón óseo que se desarrolla a partir del esqueleto axial y apendicular y además de placas óseas neomorfas. Sus dientes han sido reemplazados por una vaina queratinizada que cubre las mandíbulas a modo de pico córneo. Su cuello es muy móvil y ha desarrollado mecanismos de retracción para introducir la cabeza dentro del caparazón y protegerla.
En este grupo se encuentran las conocidas tortugas.
