Descripción
Herbáceas o sufruticosas, anuales o perennes. Tallos erectos o postrados.
Hojas simples, alternas u opuestas, sin estípulas.
Inflorescencias en espicastros,
espigas, racimos, panículas, cabezuelas o glomérulos. Flores hermafroditas
o unisexuales, bracteoladas. Perianto de 2-5 tépalos membranosos, escariosos o
rara vez herbáceos. Estambres 2-5, generalmente opuestos a los tépalos, a veces
alternando con lóbulos (pseudoestaminodios) enteros, dentados o fimbriados,
libres o soldados en tubo corto. Ovario súpero, bi o tricarpelar, sincárpico, unilocular.
Fruto de pericarpio membranoso, indehiscente o en cápsula con dehiscencia
irregular o transversal (pixidio).
Distribución
Integrada por c. 65 géneros con c. 950 especies de amplia distribución, especialmente en las zonas tropicales de África y América. Muchas están naturalizadas en gran parte del mundo.
